Shimokita Tengu Festival is the Setsubun Festival (celebrating the end of winter) for the Shimokitazawa area, and has been handed down for generations as a result of the Douryodaisatta (Tengu creature) enshrined for protection at Sotoshu Daiyuzan Shinryuji Temple, which is located near the North Exit of Shimokitazawa Station. A grand total of 80 participants parade through the shopping area in Shimokitazawa, throwing lucky beans as they go. There are mostly Daitengu and Bird-faced Tengu taking part, with mountain priests, the seven deities of good luck, and lucky men and women also taking part. There are few Tengu processions like this in Japan. After the procession, the bean throwing festivities continue at the temple.
