Stop building roads and improve public transport to reduce car use, say campaigners @CBTransport

The National Survey is a household survey of personal travel by residents of England travelling within Great Britain. Stephen Joseph, Chief Executive, Campaign for Better Transport, said: “The survey shows that car ownership is on the rise with more people using their car to make more car trips annually. This is a direct result of the Government’s huge £23 billion road building programme which encourages car ownership and as our Buses in Crisis report confirms, the lack of supported bus services is forcing people to turn to their car as their only means of getting about. “What we need is for the Government to invest in better public transport, walking and cycling routes, planning new homes near public transport, and get more freight traffic off our roads and onto rail. That will give people real choice in how they travel, and liberate communities from the damaging effects ...
