New rail franchise schedule will help progress to a locally-controlled network for the north of England

Metro's Director General, Kieran Preston, has welcomed the news that the Department for Transport is set to resume its rail re-franchising process. Problems with the West Coast Mail Line franchise process in 2012 put a halt to all open franchising competitions, but the DfT has now announced a new programme of re-franchising, including East Coast Main Line in February 2015 and both the Northern and Trans-Pennine franchises in February 2016, which could lead to them being combined under the auspices of a new Rail in the North Executive. "I'm pleased to see that the uncertainty in the rail industry, caused by the Department's mishandling of the West Coast franchising process, is coming to an end," he said.
