My last blog for @CBTransport: Ed Balls and the politics of infrastructure (&HS2)

26 September 2013: This week Ed Balls appeared to backtrack on Labour’s support for HS2. The politics of the next election were probably uppermost in his mind despite his backing for calls to get politicians out of infrastructure planning. Ed Balls’ intervention at the Labour conference appeared to shift Labour’s line on HS2. The party has been positive about HS2 (or the “north-south rail line” as they prefer to call it now) since Andrew Adonis was Secretary of State under Gordon Brown. They have moved to be more critical of the rising budget for HS2 but, for the first time, Ed Balls appeared to doubt the benefits it might bring. When pressed at a fringe meeting, the best he could offer was that “it could have some benefits for northern cities”. He also said that “every billion pounds spent on HS2 was a billion we don’t spend on roads…”. Whatever your views on HS2, it seem...
