London’s buses are booming. Ridership is at a 55-year high and scheduled mileage is ever-increasing, but a downside of the latter is a greater impact on the capital’s already poor air quality. Doing something about it is a priority for Transport for London (TfL). Some of the steps it is taking were examined at an Institute of Engineering and Technology lecture delivered by TfL Managing Director Surface Transport Leon Daniels [pictured]on 17 September. He described both what the body has accomplished already, and what is still to come as TfL continues to reduce buses’ contribution to pollution. Dispelling myths Buses’ importance to Londoners cannot be underestimated, says Mr Daniels. The capital’s 8,500-strong fleet carries 6.5m passengers per day and serves 19,500 stops.
