Sydney's long-delayed smartcard tickets are now on trial on Circular Quay-Neutral Bay ferries

The NSW Government is determined to make travel on public transport easier and simpler for people living, working in and visiting the greater Sydney area. The Opal ticketing system will deliver to customers a better ticketing experience, encourage public transport use and provide information to improve the future planning of services. Transport for NSW is in contract with the Pearl Consortium and together are responsible for the design, introduction and operation of the new system. The system is currently in the critical design phase and trialling is scheduled to start in 2012/13. Opal will be gradually introduced across the transport network. Transport for NSW is working on when the light rail network will accept the system, without causing delay to the current schedule. Starting later this year, there will be a period of testing.
