Motor vehicle traffic has reached a record high: time to invest in public transport instead

In the year ending March 2017 car traffic increased by 1.4 per cent to a record high of 252.9 billion vehicle miles. HGV traffic is 7.5 per cent higher than four years ago. “We need action from Government to give people real choice in how they travel, and liberate communities from the damaging effects of ever growing traffic levels. This means investing in better public transport, walking and cycling routes, locating new homes near public transport, and getting more freight traffic off our roads and onto rail. “The Government needs to halt a road building programme that only fuels the growth in car use on our already congested roads, especially given what we now know about the country’s lethal and illegal levels of air pollution.” ENDS For further information please contact Richard Watkins, Press Officer, at Campaign for Better Transport on 020 7566 6494 / 07984 773468 ric...
