Metro services have resumed in full today (Friday) between Byker and North Shields after a six-day major line closure. Nexus, which owns, manages and is modernising the Tyne and Wear Metro, had closed the line to allow for essential modernisation work. Metro services on the route have now resumed and a normal timetable is in operation. The line closures allowed Nexus to replace 200 metres of track, replace the Carville Road bridge at Wallsend and to modernise a number of stations on the route. It was the last in a series of major line closures to replace 30-year-old Metro tracks and track beds between Byker and North Shields, following two previous closures last year and in 2011. Over the last three years Nexus has invested £46m on the line between Byker and North Shields to renew tracks, junctions, signals and stations.
