Industry reacts with ‘surprise’ to think-tank’s re-regulation plan -

The bus industry has reacted with ‘surprise’ to a report from the left wing think-tank, the IPPR, calling for a return to a regulated system. It comes after the recent Passenger Focus report where passengers gave bus service a massive 88% satisfaction rating. The report Greasing the Wheels: Supporting and Improving Britain’s Rail and Bus Services calls for the creation of London-style local transport authorities with greater regulation powers over bus services. Responding on behalf of its members, the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) says it “sees absolutely no justification for such a move.” It argues that bus passengers in the biggest towns and cities outside London are already benefiting from smart and integrated ticketing, new ways of purchasing tickets, high investment by commercial operators in bus fleets, and more choice for passengers.
