This means lorries are getting a real bonus, making it difficult for rail and water freight to compete. The Government should be supporting rail and water to the same extent, to encourage more freight to be carried this way. This isn't just a problem for competing freight services. Because HGVs aren't paying their way, taxpayers have to bear the costs of the extra road congestion, road damage and pollution they cause, as well as the danger of crashes. HGVs are five times more likely to be involved in fatal collisions than cars on minor roads. Even on motorways, HGVs are involved in 51% of fatal collisions even though they only make up 11% of the traffic driven. If more freight went by rail we could reduce road deaths considerably. The heaviest HGVs are 160,000 times more damaging to roads than cars are, meaning the bulk of road repair costs are almost exclusively caused by...
